I am an Assistant Professor of Finance at Virginia Tech Pamplin College of Business.

My research studies how companies are governed: how they pay and motivate executives, how boards oversee them, and how information flows among firms, their directors, and their investors. A central theme in my work is that the same governance tool, whether an incentive contract, a board seat, or a disclosure rule, can help or hurt depending on the broader rules, organizations, and information environment surrounding the firm.

 

Although I am primarily an empiricist, my work is grounded in economic theory. I develop formal economic models that generate testable predictions, which I then test using new data, technological tools, and research designs that use policy changes as natural experiments to isolate cause and effect.
